I have had a successful career in the healthcare industry, starting out as a Clinical Pharmacist working in one of the largest trauma hospitals in New York City in 1986 then moving into healthcare administration and sales. I have consulted for some of the top pharmaceutical firms in the country and I have negotiated multi-million dollar contracts. By 1998 I was getting burnt out of the rat race. What do you do after investing many years and many thousands of dollars in your education only to realize you didn’t care about any of it anymore?

Many people would ignore the inner voice and just keep slaving away in misery until they could retire or, more likely, until some major physical trauma stopped them in their tracks.

I wasn’t going down that path.

My challenge to myself was to leave my industry, retire my professional degrees, and completely re-invent myself using all the talents and skills that brought me the most joy and applying them to new industries.

During that period, I invested heavily in acquiring new entrepreneurial skills, not just the traditional applications they teach you in business school (been there during my MBA studies), but the real hard core stuff used by the Rockefellers and the Trumps of the world. I also learned how to continually surround myself with the right people, how to fund any project I was working on, and how to continually leverage and capitalize on what I was creating.

In a short period of time, I retired from my industry (August of 1999 to be exact) and stepped into new income streams I had quickly created. I was able to create businesses around my ideas, fund them and ultimately see my products on store shelves. I’ve sold companies that I’ve created and some I continue to be very active in. Sometimes my total involvement in a project is to collect checks every month. Those are my favorite!
